London-based design practice Areen Hospitality has been appointed to work on a 1,238-room Holiday Inn in Makkah, following a landmark agreement between InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Makkah Real Estate Company to build the world's largest Holiday Inn.

The interior design is contemporary with details of the local culture incorporated into the style to give a sense of location. Clean lines and unfussy detailing, comfortable yet robust furnishings and modern decorative elements, will provide all the comfort and modern technology needed for religious travellers. Geometric patterns typical of Arabic culture are used throughout the project with a contemporary direction in the form of screens and wall finishes.

Its 1,238 rooms will be built in two 25 storey towers and house three food and beverage outlets including an all day dining restaurant with a capacity for 800 guests. Facilities also include a 2500 sqm conference room and 1000 sqm fitness centre and outdoor swimming pool. With over 3 million pilgrims participating in Hajj and the numbers expected to increase each year, this will be the first Holiday Inn on the Pilgrimage route and will be located in Al Aziziyah area near the city’s business centre.

Andrew Linwood, Head of Design, Areen Hospitality, comments: "We are honoured to be working on such a prestigious project with one of the world's most well known hospitality brands. The scale of the challenge is exciting and we believe our response to the interiors meets this challenge with a fresh interpretation of how to incorporate local culture into an international brand."
